Raised intracranial pressure (ICP) is a common consequence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and is known tobe highly correlated with poor outcome. For this reason, it is of primary importance to manage it. Among thepotential management strategies to reduce ICP, hyperventilation (HV) is one possibility, but its administrationis controversial in the clinics. In fact, it may lead to secondary brain insults and despite aggressive invasivemonitoring, this can not be assessed at the bedside. We have carried out a study of HV effects on a cohort ofTBI patients using non-invasive hybrid diffuse opticals. Optical biomarkers could contribute to personalize andguide HV and identify risks of ischemic injury by detecting the presence of misery perfusion at the bed-side.
